From a WorldatWork panel
How enterprise comp leaders use Squirrel
“Getting data that’s more real time than what we have is helpful. If the last couple of years taught us anything, it’s that sometimes things move really fast, and they don’t move on the annual survey cycle.”
“It helps with a lot of those sanity checks: validating what we’re seeing in the survey data, and also what’s happening right now in the market.”
“We were able to put together a structure that blended both data sources and get to a place where we were able to get buy-in.”
“My team is in Squirrel weekly. We want to keep a pulse on job postings and see what the competitive environment is doing.”

FAQ
Questions comp teams ask
What data is in Squirrel?
Publicly available job postings with employer-reported salary ranges: more than 80 million of them, with 80,000 to 100,000 added every day.
Which countries does Squirrel cover?
The United States, with job data in thousands of cities, plus Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and India.
Where does the data come from?
Major job boards and employers’ own career sites. Squirrel only uses pay that employers post themselves; it never uses employee-reported or estimated pay.
How accurate is the data?
Several methods validate the data and remove outliers, inaccurate postings, duplicates, postings with estimated pay and ranges too wide to be useful. There is no black box: you can review each data point exactly as it was posted.
Does Squirrel replace our salary surveys?
No. Surveys give you depth, validated benchmarks and incumbent pay; Squirrel shows what employers are posting right now. Together they give the most complete view of the market, and Squirrel is a fast sanity check when leaders question your survey data.
Should we blend Squirrel with survey data or compare them side by side?
Both work in CompTool. Most comp teams compare Squirrel side by side with their surveys as a separate lens on the market. You can also benchmark jobs with Squirrel just as you would with a survey, and blend it with your surveys using your own weights. See market pricing
Which roles is Squirrel best for?
Frontline and hourly roles where the start rate matters most, technology roles (including remote indicators), healthcare, and new or niche roles that surveys don’t cover yet. Postings for emerging roles are also a helpful starting point when you write a job description.
When should we rely on traditional surveys instead?
For executive roles and others where bonuses, equity and long-term incentives make up much of pay, since job postings rarely show them. Surveys are also better for leveled career ladders and for what incumbents actually earn: a posting shows the rate a company offers to attract new hires, not what its tenured employees are paid.
Can we see what a specific company posts?
Yes. Salary surveys have to be anonymous, but job postings are public, so you can search Squirrel by company, job and location to see what a specific competitor is offering, and how that compares with your range.
Does Squirrel show shift differentials and sign-on bonuses?
When employers disclose them, yes. Postings in places with strong pay transparency laws, such as Colorado, California and Washington, often include shift differentials, sign-on bonuses and incentive details that most surveys don’t capture.
How often is the data updated?
Every day. Because postings arrive continuously rather than once a year, you can track wage movement month to month and spot a competitor raising its rates as it happens.
Is using job posting data a concern under antitrust guidelines?
Squirrel is built only from publicly available job postings, many of which pay transparency laws require. Antitrust guidance for HR focuses on sharing non-public pay information. We aren’t attorneys, so check with your own counsel.
Does Squirrel use our company’s data?
No. Squirrel is built from public job postings; no customer data is used.
